Oh I agree here. I find I often really need to get to the “what exactly do you expect to do with it” as they will want something thinking it will help them with X but its not really what they want.

I will buy one but that is it. It enhances the fantasy when there is a non zero chance something could happen even if ridiculously unlikely. That being said all the big, dreamworthy jackpots are no longer a dollar and much like fast food that has become to rich for my blood.

yeah although in the situation Im talking the issue isn’t the deadlines vs the technology we are configuring but in not getting the requirements from the various specialists for what they want out of it. I have encountered things like it all the time. Each team has their own priorities and they won’t really put in the effort until they are actually using the product regularly and then decide what they want out of it because its not giving them exactly what they want. Honestly can’t say it upsets me to much as ultimately it keeps me employed longer.

Honestly the biggest problem I see is not getting requirements but being pushed for deadlines. I have been in monitoring solutioning lately and we constantly can’t get answers from teams on what they need and end up having to just analyzed the data as non specialists and do a best guess because we can’t just not have the solution happen.

I really don’t think anyone is jumping in with zero analysis. Granted I have known some who will jump into something when its just a few words or even before its decided to go forward with a solution but over half the time what they do overnight provides decent info on moving forward or is helpful for gathering requirements. I mean im not blowing out my evening on a maybe but I respect the passion.

the worst part is I have always been stingy about upgrading my ram figuring I could always do it later so I run real lean. I only recently went to 16 and ran at 8 for a long while but im pretty sure 32 would help a lot.

I disagree here. You can try to build everything out theoretically and then realize the issues once you have a massive thing that does not work. This is literally waterfall vs agile. Iteration is a proper way to do things. As far as AI im not sure it speeds up coding vs companies that will purchase the addons and programs that already can speed it up. I have seen so many companies push back on purchasing jet brains but it seems like ai spend is unlimited.

What cracks me up is things they are doing that cost more (both money and resources) but don’t help at all. Like instead of the press for this or this you get an llm which can only send you to the exact same options. Adding it to IDE’s where by and large it does stuff you could get with a variety of addons.

I feel like you are the closest to getting what I meant. I had fallen out of the habit working in windows but the linux terminal is so useful im going to start making a point of having it available to do some things a bit faster.

More of a rebuke of facist policies.

ok. I have written scripts but when there is a reason. I doubt I will for my day to day. User account creation. Completely makes sense. I don’t need it to move around files or rename them. sorry I have been getting so many replies like I have never used the command line till today when I thought my post made it clear I just have not really used them with my personal machine unless I had a specific reason to.

I doubt im going to add anything to my bashrc but again I did not think I would go to the command line as a preference like I did so maybe it will happen. Even back in the day I actually just had a blurb print out when I used windows syntax back when I was learing linux syntax. I may just actually throw some aliases in if I start using complex enough commands but for now its just a few simple things.

I doubt im going to start using vim again but it could happen. never really got into emacs but have sorta went back and forth with vim and nano at the command line. Its a bit of a pain remembering things but ill admit when you do you can do things quickly. I sorta felt the same about command line. Previous to this I was only dropping down when I had to but this was the first in awhile were I used it preferentially over the gui alternative so who knows.

yeah and gui sometimes is the easier route like when moving over large parts of the file structure and your not repeating the action. I was just making a few folders and cleaning out a folder with to many disparate things when I realized its just much easier to make directories and move files over one or two folders especially when the names are similar.

Oh its not for everyone but I would not be surprised if there is more tech people like myself. Older and started before gui and loved the next step and was wild about osx. Used linux a fair amount at work. Im a pretty tech person but at some point utility and ease sorta won out in addition to using defaults (I used to customize everything but when you have to support users who mostly use default its good to be used to default). I just have not been in the habit and I forgot how nice it is in some scenarios.

I use zorin and the nvidia drivers been fine.

zorin is likely the easiest out of box distro you can get but its not a gaming distro. if gaming is that important I would consider either just using a gaming distro or dual booting one.
