I like your idea, but it just brings to mind how fragile all of our digital media is, not to mention the surrounding tech necessary to read and understand it. Maybe just an awkward sales agent, or they thought you were mad at them for in their mind trying to help. I decline phone number and zip code all the time. Also been using someone else’s phone number at grocery stores for years – started by mistake. I don’t care about accumulated points or whatever but discounts at grocery store are pretty significant for me.

So a relative of mine is a serial entrepreneur who self describes solving problems by basically just asking (nicely) for the same thing over and over again until she gets it. Personally I’ve been amused and frustrated by her inability to follow other people’s line of thought or suggestions (or rules) even though she’s as smart as anyone else so long as she’s the one directing things. I’ve thought that she is a leader more or less because she can’t be a follower and other people find it easiest to go along (if they want to work with her, which after her first success was increasingly likely).

So this robot fish, by not understanding or responding to the group has effectively made it necessary for the group to follow it as they instinctively all want to stick together.

Which makes me think the fish are naturally inclined to follow the most socially oblivious among them. But this only makes sense if the leaders are not really socially oblivious, but have only temporarily found a stronger motivation, which they communicate by overriding their normal group-school behavior, forcing the rest to follow their lead.

I could be wrong, but my understanding is the reviews are done by other academics for free, if at all… That’s why getting published is kind of reputation based and circular because the cheapest review is just to look up whether they’ve been published before.

The thing that triggers the alarm is flat and often applied as sticker. Most likely the bold design is meant to alert the cashier to deactivate it. But if you’re suggesting that you can just keep walking after the alarm goes off, I think your chances are good, unless like all the Walmarts near me, there is a police officer in the exit lobby.

At the least it should have a prominent “for entertainment purposes only”, except it fails that purpose, too

Thanks, I understand the problem with using memory after it’s been freed and possibly access it changed by another part of the process. I guess I was confused by the double free explanation I read, which didn’t really say how it could be exploited, but I think you are right it still needs to be accessed later by the original program, which would not happen in Rust.

The way I understand it, it is a bug in C implementation of free() that causes it to do something weird when you call it twice on the same memory. Maybe In Rust you can never call free twice, so you would never come across this bug. But, also Rust probably doesn’t have the same bug.

My point is it seems it is a bug in the underlying implementation of free(), not to be caught by the compiler, and can’t Rust have such errors no matter its superior design?

My Android keyboard will automatically capitalize lots of common words like target, guess, even-- shit it’s not doing it now, it heard me thinking. I guess it’s brands, but some of them I don’t recognize. I’m going to be mad if it starts doing it again as soon as I leave this thread.
