Invite Clark Kent to an interview with a Senior General in a small village in the Nevada desert. Clark arrives to an empty village full of plastic mannequins. The whole village disappears in a flash of light.

Clark arrives back to the CIA office the next day with excuses that he couldn’t make it to the interview.

  • Isn’t it just a limitation of human vision? No matter how much resolution we can create, the human eye will only ever see a certain level of resolution … anything beyond that is imperceptible to us. I think I remember reading that 4K is the maximum we can realistically appreciate and anything beyond that is impractical because no one would ever notice the difference.

The only way higher resolutions work is if you start blowing up the size of the image itself. A 20" wide image at 720p looks good but the same image blow up to 60" becomes noticeably pixelated. A 20" wide image at 8K looks sharp and blown up to 60", it still looks sharp.

  • I remember reading about something along those lines a few years ago.

When we were kids running around with our childhood friends every summer, we thought it would never end, that we would be and stay friends forever.

Then one day, we run home, wave goodbye and say ‘see you later!’ … and without us knowing, or being aware of it, that was the last time we saw our childhood friend.

We might have lived next to one another, or went to the same high school later on or even went to the same college … we never saw our friend again.

We never knew and we were never aware of when we said goodbye or saw our friend for the last time.

I think about my old childhood friends … I’m middle aged now … some of those friends died young, some got married and had a bunch of kids … a few had hard lives and became addicts … one of them is a vegetable after having suffered an overdose … and many of them just went on and had small families and did OK.

If you live in a northern climate, you have to rely on a very complicated and expensive delivery system that will supply you with this fruit that can only be grown in the tropics. And the only way to keep it economical is to create an economy where food prices are artificially kept low because first world countries systematically suppress developing countries that grow bananas into becoming stable economies that would actually provide better wages for farmers and workers who would raise the price of bananas.

We have cheap bananas because we don’t mind living in a world where we abuse farmers and workers to work for pennies to supply us in the first world with cheap bananas.

  • Local politician … a member of town council but also a character that just hung onto any and all political positions related to local politics. He never did much expect make money for himself. If he didn’t get on council, he would try for mayor, and if he got neither, Financial Controller, Administrator, Manager, whatever, as long as it was with the town. He was in essence a salesman because he could talk circles around most people with political language and a bit of education, especially when he dealt with the uneducated or gullible people. It was basically his entire career and he’s well on his way to retiring after having done nothing for anyone else or the town.

  • The greatest change everyone should expect to see in the coming decades from climate change is … mass migration.

As soon as the heat, flooding, hurricanes in the southern United States get worse, all those people are moving north, first to the northern states and then to Canada. As soon as forest fires get worse and destroy more land and communities, people like me in rural northern Ontario will migrate to cities and towns and to southern Ontario.

If conservatives think immigration is bad now, the future is going to have millions of people moving to places they don’t want to go to to be greeted by people who don’t want them there.

More often than not in my lifetime … if I see someone that is extremely happy all the time … eventually they’re going to end up extremely sad, angry or mad.

People with extreme emotions often have some really messed up things happening in their lives.

  • Isaac Newton put it best:

“I do not know what I may appear to the world; but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the sea-shore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.”

It’s completely stupid, short sighted and ignorant of us to think that we know everything there is know about the universe and natural world. There is still so much more to learn about and understand and probably far more than we can even comprehend.

But we also have to regulate how much we know and don’t know and how we can understand or not understand … because as Richard Feynman put it …

“Keep an open mind … but not so open that your brain falls out”
