Games as a service can be okay, in some situations. Ones we very rarely see due to (primarily) publisher greed.

If you’re paying for the game itself, at any point, GaaS is stupid and extremely exploitative.

If they choose to go that route however, the game needs to be free to play with separate monetization. They need to mebe things that are completely optional and don’t affect gameplay.

No, that was just development on the promised No Man’s Sky-style recovery they were working on.

It improved a bit, and then the studio began working on an overhaul internally to provide what the game should have been, sort of No Man’s Sky style… but they were shutdown by Bioware.

There’s a lot of reasons it ended up the way it did, development hell and poor management mostly. Hell, the flight mechanic, which had been added and removed several times in development, was core to the released game, and easily the best part, apparently wasn’t even decided to be a necessary feature until Patrick Soderlund, former head of EA studios, was very disappointed in a demo BioWare had shown in early 2017 that the team decided to add flying back in.

One of the core pillars of the game was essentially added just to impress an executive and keep the development going versus being canceled. Flight like in the game requires the entire map and structure of the game world to be different. If you can fly,. you now need to take advantage of the vertical space, something that simply doesn’t even get considered in most games. A mountain you can climb is not the same as needing to fill in an entire mountain range and canyon region with content.

So change it, that’s a setting that’s been there since day one on W11 to move the Start menu and taskbar stuff back to the left corner.

The start menu is a fucking mess. I really loved the Windows 10 start menu with its tiles and groups. Now you have to manually pin everything, it’s all small icons and you can’t have them in groups. You have to create sub-folders to put the icons in, adding an extra click for nothing.

The tiles were one of the biggest things people complained about on Windows 8 and 10 compared to previous versions. The Windows 11 Start Menu works more like previous versions in this regard, because that’s something people were VERY vocal about wanting back.

Don’t forget the difference in legacy software support. The answer to legacy support on Linux when an update breaks something largely being, “just don’t update then, and maybe they’ll fix it”. Meanwhile Windows will run just about any 32-bit application designed for Windows all the way back to the 90s that you throw at it.

The Linux community at large swings wildly between being extremely welcoming and helpful with figuring out how to fix a problem you run into as a new user, or completely useless and actively hostile with a superiority complex only rivaled by rich narcissists.

A lighter weight OS designed for this specific use case is more efficient than a general purpose OS. This isn’t surprising.

So can the US military. We’re talking about reality though, not what’s technically legal.

I’d argue not switching sockets constantly actually is probably more profitable for AMD directly. When you switch the socket then upgrades also require customers to purchase new boards. If they can use the same board they have, then they have more money to spend on the CPU upgrade.

Starlink provides service to areas where fiber is impossible. Like the middle of the ocean and actual rural areas where fiber runs could be tens of miles or more between homes. Those are area where no one will build out fiber unless the homeowner is paying for it themselves, the various government programs would never cover those actual rural areas despite what they claim. At best they might cover city outskirts for new infrastructure, where fiber nodes are already relatively close by. They’re never adding fiber to existing rural farms and ranches.

They are not a 1:1 service comparison. You would need to compare It to other satellite providers, and there isn’t a comparison because all of those are dogshit in comparison to Starlink.

There’s a reason it’s as popular as it is so quickly despite satellite internet in general not being new. The low earth satellite constellation means a massive difference in capability compared to conventional geostationary satellites. Multiple second latency, slow downloads nowhere near advertised double digit Mbps speeds, single digit Mbps upload speeds and often monthly data limits as low as 50GB per month are what the conventional satellite providers offer.

You realize that with a federated system they’re not just handling their own users right? They could defederate from the servers that host users causing issues, but that also means all of their users cannot interact with all those communities, without a choice. Lemmy currently only provides a sledgehammer when they really just need more fine tools.

It’s not just federated networks. It is anything with user interaction. Managing and moderating any sort of sizeable social media site is a lot harder than people think.
