  • My first contact with the web (I had been in the internet for some time already) was when a collegue at university told me about the Arena browser, and this new system, “like Gopher, but with Hypertext and pictures”. And yes, I’ve seen the CERN website, served from Tim Barners-Lee’s NeXT cube, too.

So yes, I knew the web before there were ads, the internet when services were normally open to all sides, and when people on the internet that were actually much smarter than average.

  • I have not seen the accident itself, but…

I was working in the XRay department as a clerk back then, when the EMT guys brought up a customer straight from ER. This was the first unusual thing, because that is normally not the job of the EMTs. The second unusual thing was the order form for this patient - basically any standard XRay-job on the form was selected.

And then, I was called in, too. Absolutely not in the book. Both EMTs, one of the two radiology assistents, and I had to don lead and hold this guy down. He had taken drugs, left his group, and hugged a driving trucks’ front. He had broken about everything you can have broken without croaking on the spot, and was so far away that he tried to hit and kick with his busted limbs at the people who were trying to help him. Imagine four men holding down one guy without damaging him even further.

  • I never said anything like compromise. I prefer neutrality (as far as one can get it, but it is way easier in Europe). Why do you all think that anything that is not explicitly left biased is already compromised?

There are f-ups on both sides of the spectrum. This does not say both sides are equal - on the contrary, there is a shitload more f-up on the right side. But general whitewashing the left is also not OK.

  • That is quite a complex task. Being able to focus the beam in a certain direction is one thing. And it is the easier part.

But where should it focus to? You cannot just base the up/down position of the head and therefore the lamp as such, you also need to know where the wearer is looking left or right of the direction of travel. Just imagine you are sitting in a car and a guy with such a headlamp is coming in your direction. All this biker needs to do is just turn his head and look at you for some reason, and blam! You are staring right into a blazing array of LEDs.
