PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Don't forget also Itch.io has a summer sale ongoing!
8·1 year agoIt’s more of a space for indie games without having the barrier of dealing with Steam and all that set up.
Like if I wanted to make a game about pooping in my neighbor’s yard, I can just upload the game to itch and have it ready for people to play. (Or sell it too).
With Steam, you have a significantly bigger set up. There so many more things to configure, things that a indie dev may not be ready to answer yet. Not to mention, it opens up the door to reviews and criticism from the “general gaming public”.
It’s common for most indie devs to use itch.io to test run their game ideas with a small crowd before launching it on Steam.

Technology@lemmy.world•AI-powered network of Russia-based websites masquerading as local American newspapers is pumping out fake stories targeting the US election, investigation findsEnglish
252·1 year agoNah. Our stupid ass government only recently started hiring hackers who smoke weed. But even then, there’s too much stupid red tape.
“Both the NSA and the DOD have a ton of talented hackers, yet when it comes to actually performing disruptive cyber operations, for some reason we as a country are just frozen and scared,” Caceres says. “And that needs to change.”
He points to ransomware actors, mostly based in Russia, who extracted more than a billion dollars of extortion fees from victim companies in 2023 while crippling hospitals and government agencies. North Korea–affiliated hackers, meanwhile, stole another $1 billion in cryptocurrency last year, funneling profits into the coffers of the Kim regime. All of that hacking against the West, he argues, has been carried out with relative impunity. “We sit there while they hack us,” Caceres says.

And also
It also doesn’t help that the Republican Party have outright praised Russia, which means they’re already inside.

6·1 year agoI type my search into the post and then usually some kind person finds me a link and calls me a asshole
Haha I never seen that one.
Ive seen the dog one.
Gonna sound racist but deal with it.
I constantly meet asian developers (Singapore , India, China, etc) with this edgelord personality. They come to American conferences and meetups, say some wild sexist shit, and someone has to politely let them know not to.
Some backtrack. Some apologize. Some literally freeze up and pretend like it didn’t happen.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•In the US, did Amazon kill the mall, is everyone too broke, or a combination of other factors?
3·1 year agoWithout outing yourself… Can you share where?
Or even a population size.
In the big cities I’m in, they’ve become deserts.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•In the US, did Amazon kill the mall, is everyone too broke, or a combination of other factors?
13·1 year agoPeople use Amazon instead of the mall because they can still afford the Temu-level garbage Amazon sells.
I mean a few reasons.
- Pricing is better on Amazon vs mall. I can get a Gangsta Luffy T-shirt at $12 vs $20 at hot topic
- Inventory is significantly bigger. Outside of clothes, I can’t imagine not finding the exact online version and compare
- Malls are kinda ugly now. Many are indoor and just wall to wall commercialism.
- People suck. Naked dude stealing stop signs and angry Karen about the take a dump on the escalator.
- Driving vs ship to door.
- Both have temu-level garbage, but it’s cheaper on Amazon.

51·1 year agoI dunno. Steam did it well enough. I was buying cheap games for years. I could get a kick ass GOTY game for like $5 while GameStop was still selling it used on consoles for $20.

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Junior dev VS FAANMG dev
471·1 year agoBoth sides.
I constantly call out juniors who do things like ignore warnings, completely unaware that the warning is going to cause serious tech debt in a few months.
But Ive also unfortunately shrugged after seeing hundreds of warnings because to update this requires me to go through 3 layers of departments and we’re still waiting on these six other blockers.
Pick and choose I guess.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What’s the worst piece of technology you’ve ever owned?
46·1 year agoSamsung appliances. Fridges. Washing machines.
Got them as part of the rental unit. They’re very new looking. But every month is some new mess up.
God I would replace them if I owned this place.
If you forget about Lemmy, straight to jail. No question.
When I was a kid, I used to play video games while jumping around. I’d stand in front of the TV, bounce around, play Mario, run in circles. My parents didn’t care.
At some point, society said that was weird, and I had a gaming chair?
Watching myself balloon (and already using a standing desk for work) went back to standing while playing video games. I enjoy it!

Back and mah day, we had lead in our paint and lead in our hearts and were just fine, if you ignore all our wild violent behavior!
