A popular streamer Lirik revisited the game 4 months ago and it was completely chocked-to-the-brim with bugs. Like literally every few minutes there was a bug, including several immediately when he began the game.

Is there anything stopping something like connecting your credit card to GNOME Software Manager and then putting a big fat “donate” button next to the “install” button? I imagine there are legal considerations.

Seems like a very rushed launch to try and meet the “Summer” deadline (which they still missed by a week of course). Valve didn’t even update Steam Rich Presence so it still says you are playing “CS:GO”. The store page doesn’t have the right video on it, there’s no special graphic in the store or anything and the game banner hasn’t been updated. Lots of cut corners. For some reason Valve has been going crazy lately, they also released the Dota compendium today, SteamOS 3.5 a week ago and SteamVR 2.0 just a few days ago. Makes sense they missed some stuff.

Games have actually gotten cheaper over time adjusted for inflation even as production costs have risen, it’s crazy. A NES game in today’s money would be around $160.

All you do is update your current system, change your repo sources to whatever branch you want, then do a full-upgrade. For branches there is stable, testing, and unstable (called sid). They don’t recommend you use sid for everyday use, things can be buggy (currently sid is on GNOME 44 at any rate). Instructions

Counter Strike has been the same game for 23 years, basically every new game is an “update”. Porting the game to Source 2 is the single biggest thing that has happened to Counter Strike since 2004 when they moved from GoldSrc, so might as well brand it as a new game.

Do you just look for things to get mad at? This hasn’t even been implemented yet. Even if it had, it would be opt-in. And even if you opt-in, the data is all anonymous and you would be able to see exactly the data that gets sent out. If Fedora or anyone else really wanted to spy on you, I assure you they wouldn’t let you know beforehand.

Obviously that’s a stigma Capcom is trying to break through. Most phones/tablets these days are even more powerful than a Switch, yet people pay $60 for games on the Switch but not on phones?

Most people don’t replace SteamOS on their device so I don’t think that’s true. Plasma is a perfectly suitable replacement for Windows unless you really need access to Adobe products or something.

There’s more that work and work better on Windows than Linux than there are the other way around though.

True but It’s a number that is shrinking every day. We are down to about ~100 games at this point that explicitly cannot work? I play a lot of games and I can’t remember the last time I tried to play a game and it didn’t work because I was on Linux.

Windows plays every PC game in existence

There’s a surprising amount of older PC games that don’t work on Windows anymore, but work fine on Linux. I remember trying to play New Vegas a few years ago on Windows 10 and needing four separate mods just to get it to play properly, and even after all that it would still crash every 15-20 minutes. I’ve since played it all the way through on Fedora and SteamOS with zero tinkering and no crashes.

It also allows you to use the device as a pc replacement via displaying the screen on a tv/monitor

I’ve tried upscaling with ESRGAN as well and it has similar problems. It messes with the original textures too much. For example, it made carpet look like a solid surface. Skin looks too smooth and shiny. That kind of thing.

I hate how AI upscaling looks and I really don’t get why everyone seems to be gaga over it. In addition to the artifacts and other weirdness it can introduce, it just looks generally like someone smeared vaseline over the picture to me.

Ok, not a typo. Other than the title of these patch notes, is it referred to as “Steam Deck OS” anywhere else? On Preview branch the distro still says “SteamOS Holo”.

The fact is that they are rebranding it to Steam Deck OS.

As far as I know they’ve said nothing about that. It’s reasonable to say that the title is a typo for a couple reasons.

1. They’ve stated they want SteamOS on third-party devices before
2. There’s also the rumored VR headset running SteamOS as well

Two use cases for the OS that have nothing to do with Steam Deck, so “Steam Deck OS” makes no sense as a name. I personally think they are waiting for Plasma 6+HDR support+VR support before they ship a desktop version, it’s important to have feature-parity with Windows out the gate for good word-of-mouth.
