  • Are you suggesting that architectural styles are not based on interactions with different peoples and that the type of architecture, for example, from 200-500CE is not going to vary greatly in different regions such as East Asia and Europe? And that those peoples with individual cultures and ideas about architecture won’t ever interact with their neighbors, creating cross-cultural styles? That these cultures will never interact and reach a quorum on specific styles of buildings, especially when brought together through larger institutions such as religion?

  • From a content creator’s standpoint, sure. The issue is that when the end user doesn’t have a shiny new thing they’re interested in in front of them every 30 or so seconds they just log off and stop using the service. Why use mastodon if bluesky/threads/whatever shows them, generally, more of what they want to see and less of what they don’t?

Most people are using social media as a way to veg out and unwind these days. They don’t really care if somebody is able to game the system, just that they see more that lets them veg out (or alternatively makes them angry, driving increased engagement).

I agree that this is generally bad, but trying to sidestep it completely like Mastodon is is just going to result in a network that never hits the critical mass necessary to start exponential growth.

But the roots of words aren’t what words mean in modern English. Otherwise, spirit would mean ‘breath’. Logic doesn’t mean “words” even though it came from logos. Besides all that, we’re on “science” memes so it doesn’t really matter what the term means outside of that world.

I was able to get to this number: 1 048 576 by using base 4 and making each finger a different “10” s place using each finger segment and the tip of the palm below it but you have to keep track of how many of each order of magnitude you have by yourself. Alternatively, just use a piece of paper.

You’re very good at saying you’re right and very bad at providing evidence. The best thing about lemmy’s size is I can recognize which usernames to disregard immediately after enough encounters.

The creator of critical race theory (a very famous and highly regarded black lawyer and law professor) would agree with this guy. If you don’t believe me, look him up. He argued for segregation to remain the law of the land when Brown V BoE occurred, but for ‘separate but equal’ to be actually enforced. Instead, schools were desegregated to change the global American image in the name of the Cold War and fighting the ideological battle. His vision would have seen eventual desegregation over a period of time on a set path to avoid the mass violence and angry sentiment incurred by too fast a change. The same thing happens today with trans and gay people getting called groomers. We were doing alright (in the US) until Obergefell V Hodges. Same thing.
