The Conservative leader has pledged to change the culture of the Canadian Armed Forces from what he calls a “woke” culture to a “warrior” one.

Really didn’t take long to find the culture war dog whistle.

Cutting spending on social services is how it traditionally works.

They’re already suffering severely. It’s all downhill from here folks.

Yeah, I’m sure that “woke culture” is the reason why we can’t meet spending committments.

Conservatives are all for the military, until it comes to paying the people in it.

The words that come out of his mouth are ever just pretty noises enjoyed by a certain segment of the population. They don’t have meaning beyond that of wind through the leaves or a fart in the elevator.

This is true of most politicians. They know that getting elected is not really about policy, but rather about capturing the sentiments of the population. When Trudeau was elected, the country was sick of the dour Harper et al brand and wanted a younger, hipper PM with a hope-and-change message. Now that Trudeau has run through his idea list, and Canadians are unhappy with the economy, Poilievre just needs to reflect that sentiment. You hardly ever hear him talk about actual policy because he knows that concrete ideas can be attacked. Riding the wave of resentment is the successful strategy for him, so he rarely says anything beyond criticizing Trudea. I’m pretty sure that the Liberals are resigned to losing at this point, and one gets the sense that Trudeau is just tired. And Freeland is smart enough to keep her powder dry and wait until we get sick of Poilievre in turn.

Now that Trudeau has run through his idea list

… and ignored the one most important to Canadians that got him elected (electoral reform)… … Canadians are unhappy with the economy

The unmitigated failure on the disability file had a profound real world effect on most of the people I know and myself.

I’m not planning on voting conservative but they’ll ignore it, like me. I don’t understand what the hell I’m looking at.

I am sure many of them have seen it and support his votes. In fact, I know many who support the “opposition for the sake of ‘owning the libs’” votes and think it is a good thing. Nothing like a right winger to cut off their nose to spite their face.

Under a conservative government Irving, Pattison, Weston come together to fund the President’s Choice ® Army! Defending the interests of Canadian families! (And by that we mean these 3 Canadian families exclusively).

“Restore” the era of private sector paramilitary agents, for Walmart, Costco, Loblaws, Imperial Oil, RBC, Amazon, and every big company you can think of! And use most of the money “saved” for having less than no military to “axe the taxes” that poor ol’ Galen and the boys have to pay.

There’s a great word for private militaries: that word is “mercenary”.

And to quote Terry Pratchett: the problem with paying people to start fighting is that you end up having to pay them to stop.

It won’t work, but conservative voters are great at knee jerk voting. They believe what scum sucking politicians say now and forget it ever happened later on. The kind of voters cons absolutely adore.

“I think there’s a blazing red line between anything that would be deemed abuse or sexual harassment and what is more in the area of overemphasis on appearances, overemphasis on changes to uniforms, to the relaxation of certain what used to be called the Queen’s orders and regulations within the military,” MacKay said. “And I think that that’s where members are bristling, particularly long-serving members.”

This is, for the record, complete bullshit. The vast majority of soldiers love the new grooming standards. They are absolutely psyched to be allowed to have longer hair and beards. And if you show any US soldier a video of Canadian infantry their first reaction is always “Holy shit, I wish we could have beards.” The only people mad about this are a tiny subset of crusty old warrants who just hate anything that isn’t “How it was in my day.” These are the same people that think Canada should go back to using the C1. No one takes them seriously.

Of course, what they actually mean when they say “ending wokeness” is kicking my wife out of the army because she’s trans, despite the fact that she’s a better soldier than 90% of the people in her company (she was the literally the best shot in her entire platoon in DP-1, and got praised endlessly by her instructors in every single subject).
