Same way they can look at the metaphor for capitalists are destined for hell a la stuffing a camel through the eye of a needle unharmed - by choosing to interpret the eye of a needle to actually mean a gate arch or some shit.

Instead of changing yourself to follow the beliefs in the word of your God, you change your God’s words to follow your beliefs.

Well, on the one hand, you have an old book you might read all the way through once (but probably not) that says to be responsible stewards of the earth. But on the other hand, you have people on the TV every night telling you to support whatever makes corporations the most money.

Old ideas can have value but it’s hard to compete with new ideas when those new ideas have a lot more money and can be crafted to appeal to a specific audience (regardless of what’s true).

A chunk of my extended family buys into this and it is part of why I don’t ever visit them anymore. A couple of them listen to radio stations that preach this 24/7. Grandma was really religious and was the kind of person to hire immigrants, underpay them, then complain about immigrants being moneyless sinners. That side of the family amazes me…

Unfortunately a literal reading of Genesis 1:28 says to subdue the Earth (master or control in a few translations, and use all the resources for God’s purpose in one). Those trying to paint a nicer picture might change it to being stewards of the planet (which is what I always heard as a kid), but that’s not what’s there. To be fair, it was written in a time where the world seemed endless and humans couldn’t possibly destroy everything, a mindset that lasts to this very day. Even less than a century ago we were okay with dumping stuff into the water or burying it, or burning things because it was a huge world and the smoke disappeared into the sky.

Because that would require a modicum of critical reasoning and the willingness to occasionally and ever-so-slightly sacrifice for the benefit of others.

Just remember that the group you’re describing are conservatives first and foremost. Christianity and the GOP are just their current excuses for their selfishness.

“Conservative Christian” is and oxymoron but having never read any Jesus, its easy to identify that way.

First of all you don’t become a conservative Christian by being willing to read. So lets imagine DeSantis misspoke and said “The only way to ensure that Trump can violate The Constitution and overthrow our democracy is to read the New Testament and understand it”

    Here are some probable outcomes:

    • They see that Jesus is a leftist and can no longer call themselves Christian, when asked their religion they say “none, atheiest”.
    • They see that Jesus is a leftist and conclude that the bible was simply written by leftists and that it isn’t true.
    • They see that Jesus has good ideas, unconsciously redefine what conservative means to them, and stay quiet until someone they considerd a friend angrily calles them a libtard for stating one of jesuses teachings in disagreement of something thet had repeated from facebook.
    • They see that Jesus is a leftist, they trust in their lord choosing his love and reason over the hatred and fear of man and can no longer call themselves a conservative.
    • They conclude that Pontius Pilate and the Roman government where the good guys and Jesus was an evil libtard who earned his crusofiction and they start worshoping Pilate instead.
    • The whole thing goes over the readers head
    • They strengthen their belief by ignoring parts that clearly don’t fit their belief, and twisting anything that can kind of fit their beliefs.

There’s no such thing as ‘apolitical’. The very idea of leaving politics to our superior politicians is what brought us and keeps us in this state.

This is not at all a political issue however. This is about not being a trash human being. Being racist is not a political opinion, it’s spreading hatred in the world and being a waste of skin.

Then you could subscribe to both communities. Think of it as having a separate category for gay and straight porn, some people are into both, some into one or the other, some into neither and because it’s in its own category everyone can pick exactly what they want to see.

If porn was only categorised by gender and orientation that would be great, but it’s not. There’s a million obscure communities for every single aspect of every fetish, and there’s usually zero way to include everything but feet and piss. It takes so much effort to find something fresh because you have to intentionally look up skirts, or lesbian domination, or voyeurism or what have you.

Maybe something you’d like is in feet, because of a brief under the table socks on tease, and that’s just a tragedy because that’s just fine.

        Is math also political?

Yes. Statistics for example gets politicized all the time, remember when Trump said not to monitor for covid because monitoring it will only find more cases?

Also, possibly the most classic example of misuse of statistics in politics is the assertion of “statistics show black people commit more crimes per capita than white people.” When in reality, black people in the West have much lower median incomes than white people due to their long history of facing marginalization and descrimination, and it’s income that is correlated to crime, not race. We know this because when you normalize for income, there is no difference in crime rates yet that fallacious statistic gets brought up by racists again and again to justify their racism.

Yes, this post when interpreted as ironic, is making fun of socialism and CRT. Regardless it is leveraging oft used conservative boogeymen buzzwords for a joke. It dilutes the original use of the words, and whether or not intended, degrades their meaning. It’s a very common tactic of fascism and hard right actors. It’s exactly what Trump did when assuming the ‘fake news’ moniker and repurposing it to attack media. This entire site has been circling the drain for some time, and the downvotes just prove none of you value actual discussion.

I mean, intent matters a little at least, right? Like, I prefer to use the term progressive when describing myself and I found this meme to be a firm chuckle and not problematic. It’s saying that the logic used by things like CRT is thematically identical to logic used in biblical texts, which many on the right would actually oppose politically and ideologically.

So like, if the intent was to reframe CRT in a biblical light so as to show ethical inconsistency on the part of Republicans, and it works on a logical and a humourous level, what exactly is the problem?

I don’t think it’s even going that far. I interpreted it as the conservative throwing the term around glibly without any actual understanding of what it means, simply because they don’t like what is being said, and a perhaps a very tenuous connection.

I understand that. You’re the first one to trust I have a point. Trolling from either side serves right wing agendas. It degrades the discussion. I know this is a meme thread, but this thread has been nonstop political garbage for about a month.

I feel like you might be ignoring the purpose of satirical content. IMO, it serves two purposes: the first is to entertain and consolidate people who already agree with the message, the second is to raise cognitive dissonance in those that disagree with the message by raising awareness of hypocrisy.

As someone who cut their teeth on 4chan and ended up harbouring some fairly bigoted views, political satire is a large part of why I eventually abandoned those views.

To write it off as ineffective or even counterproductive seems to me to be a gross misunderstanding of its purpose.

The right wing won’t return you the favor, you’re giving them too much credit. Facism didn’t lose to kindness in WW2.

Honestly, you may be right in that it serves right wing agendas but I have no idea since I’m not right wing. I do know they deserve to be made fun of regardless if they think it helps them or not. I feel that a lot of them are fascists, racists, trolls, etc. so it doesn’t really matter if we make fun of them because they’re pretty ingrained. I also don’t think it devalues CRT or makes anything normalized, we’re just making fun of hypocrites.

I think you’re alienating your allies here. This is clearly intended to be left leaning, and you’re lumping OP with Trump and facists.

Okay, so, I am reading what you’re saying, and I don’t really know how one could make a joke that isn’t, by your understanding, part of the conservative agenda.

And if that’s what you think, I am curious why you’re looking at memes at all.

There’s a universe of thing’s worth joking about, but this post just serves political agendas, mostly right wing ones, and isn’t funny. CRT has become such a punching bag it’s lost all meaning. I’ve had the experience of my (very different) field of study becoming a political football, and the end result was the field suffering for years afterwards. Those setbacks are due to the right wing of political discourse choosing to meme the subject and make it political. The very act of targeting it was the main transgression, but subsequent meming on both sides only dragged things down further.

So, telling people to not try and be funny, even those you agree with, is definitely alienating your allies. I hear what you’re saying, but I have also seen parents losing their ever loving shit at PTA meetings… And to say that everyone must treat those ignorant displays with quiet respect, because CRT was mentioned… Seems a bit beyond the pale.

The downvotes only validate I’m right that this site is in the shitter. You just assume because the message is liberal, it doesn’t play into right leaning agendas.

I think the meme is fairly clearly making fun of American conservative/fascist discourse. Like the whole watering down of any semblance of a working definition of CRT when referenced by right wing pundits and moral panic board meeting parents, where right wing people call every call to be somewhat decent human beings “CRT” or “wokism”, and then have no actual working meaning for those words except as something that seems left wing and makes them uncomfortable.

To be honest it sounds like you don’t want people to mock conservatives, and that’s a tough ask when they make it so easy.

Sort of. I’m saying mocking only lowers the overall dialogue into the shitter, which doesn’t serve the purpose you think. It may make you feel morally superior, but does nothing to fix the issue, and arguably further entrenches the two sides.

just prove none of you value actual discussion.

This is a meme sub. Would be like me getting upset at people for posting Linux related questions under the Linux sub vs some tech sub or Windows sub.

There are proper places to have discussions and if you think a meme sub is one of them then you are going to have a bad time. Whether it plays into the hands of conservatives or not is another debate - but generally speaking I do not think making fun of their religion and views in this manner is something they can really weaponize. At some point they are likely to reach a tipping point where more and more people find them insufferable and start tuning them out. People can rarily keep using the same playbook to engage people over and over without them getting tired &/or fed up with it and them eventually.

A good number of us caught on to their grift early on, but en masse, people are slow and dumb. Sadly they need time to catch up to the latest scams and new mediums.

Lemmy was already dying, just look at plots of active users since the Reddit API flap. It’s going down not up. The sooner it does, the sooner a stronger decentralized platform, or newer version of Lemmy, can take it’s place. It’s current iteration is a rickety Reddit clone that suffers from rolling defederation.

I didn’t claim Lemmy was or wasn’t dying. I said that you unsubbing wasn’t going to kill Lemmy.

I really doubt Lemmy is dying though. In much the same way Mastodon isn’t dead merely because the Twitter exodus stopped. It’ll come and go in waves, just like Mastodon I expect. Or maybe it’ll go back to pre-Reddit numbers, when it still wasn’t dead.
